Pre-University | Research and Writing Development Program

This intensive and rare 5-week Research and Writing Development Program entails a university professor training the student in use of appropriate methods to their field of study. These may include archival research, laboratory studies, survey collection and analysis, among other approaches to conducting research as well as analyzing data. The student will also learn the art of writing a scholarly abstract for a publishable paper on their work.

Not only will the student gain an advantage through on-the-ground research experience and some expertise in the topic of study, they will also cultivate a scholarly connection to top experts in their field that is extremely rare for pre-university students. Such highly coveted experiences yield insights that can orient students in their field and towards potential career paths, as well as translate into recommendations to admissions committees and scholarship boards.

Since we comprise a small team of professional academics, we are only able to take on a few exceptional students every semester. Therefore, we will interview applicants during the first week of June and choose the best fit for our academic team. This will ensure that the experience is fruitful both for the academic and the student.

Lab Experience

We offer access to labs as part of the One-on-One Mentorship Program. Students will work with a world-renowned scholar as part of an ongoing research project. The research project will be linked to a public health issue, such as investigating access to clean drinking water by mapping diseases in working class areas. In the recommendation letter, the student will receive credit for furthering academic research of the professor and contributing towards the social uplift of marginalized communities.

Publication and Recommendation

We aim to publish at least a section of the student’s research paper (if not all of it) in a scholarly magazine or a mainstream newspaper/magazine. All students who complete the program will also receive a certificate and a letter of recommendation from the professor. A recommendation letter for a high school student from a university professor will reflect the rigorous quality of the research paper produced during this intensive program. If the research topic of the student contributes to the research of their professor, the student’s contribution will be highlighted as part of the professor’s scholarly output, significantly enhancing the resumé of the student.
